SOPHIA’S HEARTBEAT QUICKENED. BOTH of them scooted forward in their chairs. It wasn’t a long article, just a few skinny paragraphs squished beside the margin.

The Mystery of Donway Shallows

For decades, Donway Shallows has stood abandoned in the historic district. Once a vital part of town industry, it now serves as a relic of days gone by, visited only by vandals and the odd drunken teenage party.

Last week, it served as the setting for yet another noteworthy town event. When

“I have to go home,” Luke said.

Sophia nearly jumped out of her skin. “But we just found it,” she told him. She tapped on the computer screen. “Look—”

“I know,” Luke said miserably. “But I have to go home. My dad’s asking if you guys need a ride back too.”

DJ shook his head. “We can take the bus.”

Luke lingered another moment by their chairs, his mouth a harsh, unhappy line.

“Can’t you convince him to let you stay?” Sophia whispered. “You could take the bus with us. Or just come to my place for dinner.”

Luke snorted. “He’d never be okay with that. Not before meeting your dad in person and asking him a million questions and scouting out your house first. Plus, we always have to have dinner together as a family now. Every night.”

“Luke?” his father said.

Luke sighed. “Tell me everything you find out,” he said, and waited for them to both swear it before he followed his dad from the room.

Sophia swiveled around to read the rest of the article. It was so short, and she was so excited, that she had to read it twice before any of the words stuck in her head. By the end of the second read, she’d gleaned the most pertinent facts:

1. This article had been written thirteen years ago, about a week after Sophia’s birth

2. The “noteworthy town event” it was talking about had happened on June 11

3. Which was Sophia’s birthday

4. The “event” itself was foggy, because it had occurred early in the morning, and the only witness had been an old gentleman who frequented the area

5. Said man was very advanced in age and had only been able to give an addled account of things

6. First he said it had been a man

7. Then he said it had been a woman

8. But one thing remained constant

9. He was very, very sure that as he passed through Donway Shallows that morning, he saw a person appear where, a moment before, no person had stood

“DJ,” Sophia breathed. “It’s possible. People can cross.”

“Hold on,” DJ said. “This is barely anything—this is like three paragraphs about something a guy maybe saw—”

“This happened on my—on our birthday,” Sophia said. “Exactly on the same day, the day of the last eclipse. And Mr. Scot didn’t just have it on his wall for nothing. You saw all those books in his study. He’s been looking into Donway Shallows and eclipses a lot longer than we have. He wouldn’t still be poking around the mill if he thought it was ‘barely anything.
